The best pay stub template is the one that clearly displays the information your payroll record and applicable requirements need. In the Create Pay Stub generator, Regular, Compact, Modern, Bank Style, Simple, and Classic use the same calculation engine. Choose by layout and displayed fields, then review the actual preview before checkout.

This comparison reflects the live Templates & Pricing page reviewed October 20, 2026. It explains the six options without treating appearance as proof of accurate payroll, legal compliance, or acceptance by another organization.

Do the six pay stub templates calculate pay differently?

No. The product's FAQ states that all six use the same calculation engine. The differences concern layout, styling, and which optional details are displayed. All six include earnings, deductions, pay dates, and YTD totals.

A template cannot fix an incorrect pay period, incomplete tax input, or an unsupported YTD starting balance. Check those facts in the form and source records. If you are still entering the payment, use our generator walkthrough before comparing presentation choices.

Changing the template retains your entered information, including details a particular design does not display. Retained information and visible information are different: confirm what appears in the document, not just what remains in an input box.

Which optional fields does each template display?

The following matrix follows the product's current comparison. “Yes” means the template supports displaying that supplied information. It does not mean that you should add an unnecessary identifier or that leaving a field blank meets every applicable rule.

The company details column concerns the optional branding/contact/EIN group. It does not mean that Regular omits the employer name or main company address. Likewise, an employee-address display difference says nothing by itself about how the calculation engine treats a payroll tax state.

How do Regular, Compact, Modern, Bank Style, Simple, and Classic differ?

Regular: a familiar earnings-statement structure

Regular suits someone who prefers a conventional arrangement and does not need the optional company logo, phone, or EIN displayed. It supports the employee address and marital-status display. Review the actual preview rather than assuming a familiar format contains every required payroll field.

Compact: information in a neatly arranged layout

Compact supports the company branding/contact/EIN group but does not display the employee address or marital status. Consider it when those omissions are appropriate for the intended record. Do not choose it solely to hide a field that a recipient or applicable requirement needs.

Modern: a vertically stacked design

Modern supports the company details group and employee address, with no marital-status display. Its stacked arrangement offers a different reading order from a traditional statement. Check the length of names and addresses and the visibility of current versus YTD totals in your own preview.

Bank Style: detailed columns and totals

Bank Style supports company details and employee address, without marital status. Its name describes a design option: it does not mean that a bank issued, verified, endorsed, or agreed to accept the document. Review the earnings and deduction columns for clarity, just as you would in any other design.

Simple: a balanced, straightforward layout

Simple supports the optional company details group, while employee address and marital status are not displayed. Compare it with Compact using your actual data to decide which arrangement is easier to read. A shorter-looking document should still preserve all the information needed for its purpose.

Classic: traditional structure with broader optional-field display

Classic supports all three optional-field groups in the comparison: company details, employee address, and marital status. That can make it useful when you want those supplied details visible together. “More fields” does not automatically mean better; include accurate, relevant information and review its placement.

How should you choose a template?

Use three decisions in order: required information, readable layout, and final cost. Starting with a color or a low price can lead you to discover too late that a needed field is not displayed.

Choose a pay stub template in three stages: confirm needed fields, review readability with actual data, and then check the order total.
Field coverage comes before appearance. A template name or price does not establish accuracy or recipient acceptance.
  1. List the necessary fields. Check the actual payroll situation, applicable wage-statement rules, and the recipient's instructions when documents will be submitted.
  2. Compare the field matrix. Shortlist designs that support the appropriate information.
  3. Preview with the real entries. Check long addresses, earnings rows, deduction descriptions, dates, and totals.
  4. Check the cost. Confirm the selected layout, number of stubs, optional add-ons, and final checkout total.

Employer recordkeeping and the information printed on an employee's statement are related but distinct. The DOL recordkeeping fact sheet explains required records for covered nonexempt workers without prescribing a particular record format.

State display rules can be more specific. For example, California's wage-statement guidance lists required information and limits the displayed SSN to the last four digits or an alternative employee identifier. This is a California example, not a declaration that any of the six templates automatically satisfies every California or other state requirement. See our California pay-stub guide when that jurisdiction applies.

How should you use colors and fonts?

The template gallery offers color and font controls. Use them to improve readability and fit your company's presentation, not to make a document appear to come from another organization. Keep the issuer's identity accurate.

If the same payment appears in two designs, the payroll facts should remain consistent. Use the pay-stub reading guide to compare the meanings of the fields rather than merely their positions. A design change should not be used to cover up a discrepancy in the underlying record.

How do pricing and optional deposit slips affect the choice?

The product lists prices per stub, and the order total depends on the selected design, quantity, and add-ons, with any eligible coupon applied at checkout. Review the live pricing page and final order summary because prices and promotions can change.

A coordinated deposit slip is optional and charged per stub when selected. It matches the chosen presentation, but it does not move funds, create a deposit, or replace a bank's confirmation. The form states that deposit slips retain a VOID marking even after the pay-stub PREVIEW watermark is removed. Do not treat a decorative or document add-on as evidence that a payment occurred.

What should you check before downloading?

Compare the final document with the payroll record: issuer, employee, period, payment date, each earnings category, deductions, current totals, and YTD. Confirm that a field retained in the form but omitted by the selected design is genuinely appropriate to leave off the displayed statement.

Will a more expensive template be accepted more readily?

There is no acceptance guarantee based on template price. Ask the recipient about its documentation and verification process. The issuer and accuracy of the information matter independently of visual styling.

Can I change designs without retyping?

The current generator retains entered details when switching designs. Review the new preview because its field support and placement can differ.

Which one should I use first?
